No matter how hard you try, you will never succeed in the grand scheme of life without the help of others…
I am the most stubborn, hard-headed person I know. It took me the better part of 30 years making silly mistakes before a wise old sage introduced me to what I now consider a “life-changer.” My friend Bill recommended that I assemble for myself a personal board of directors.
As I scratched my head is wonder, he asked me if I knew of a company that operated without a board of directors. Obviously I could not, which only validated his point. A board of directors is absolutely essential for the successful navigation of any company whether new and old. From Apple to Kickstarter, every successful company in the world today is guided by a board of directors. If a board is good enough for the largest company on the planet then it is certainly good enough for me.
So, in 2009 I assembled my very own board of directors. To this day, I meet with 4 men whom I have given full access to my life. We meet on a quarterly basis and they ask me the hard questions that only they can ask. Questions that pertain to my character, my priorities, my struggles and my goals. The only person in my life that knows more about me than these 4 men is my wife!
Why would I mention my personal board of directors in the context of this blog series? Well, we are talking second chances. If you’ve made a mistake that has caused you to start over, there is a strong chance that you know someone who has encountered a similar experience. If you can make it a habit to seek advice from wiser and older mentors, you can begin to fast-track your own experiences and grow much more quickly.
Believe me, I know the concept seems far-fetched because I felt the same when I initiated the first step. Now that 5 years have passed I am confident that there is no way I would have made it to where I am now without the guidance of my very own PERSON AL BOARD OF DIRECTORS…
